The following are a series of words used in the IT industry and their use/definition


  • Cable / cord / wires - need to connect parts of the computer together - and to the power source
  • Computer - the case that holds the hard drive and other components
  • Cupholder - NOT a part of any computer!
  • Cursor - spot on screen where activity occurs when you type (or not), usually looks like an arrow
  • Electricity - creates the Magic Smoke that makes electronics work, DON'T LET IT OUT! 
  • Keyboard -  that part of the computer, with numbers and letters, you type on
  • Laptop - smaller, lighter computer with a built-in monitor, keyboard, and trackpad
  • Liquid (any) - instant computer killer
  • Monitor / screen - the part of the computer you look at when using the computer
  • Mouse - not the rodent, what you move to control the cursor, if not using touchpad
  • Operator / user / customer - the person interacting with the computer
  • Sledgehammer - useful for venting frustration, but not for repairing computers
  • Tech Support - Trosten the GREAT!!!
  • Trackpad / touchpad - the square area on a laptop that is used instead of the mouse
  • Windows - an operating system that makes the computer work
